Gas Lines

Gas lines distribute gas to most buildings at low pressure. Pipes that run under the street carry natural gas while pipes that run from storage tanks can carry propane. The propane storage tanks may be located behind a building or, as in the case of older tanks, are buried under ground. Both types of gas may be distributed throughout a house by pipes. Black iron or galvanized lines are used for natural gas, while propane is distributed in copper lines.

Some communities prohibit the use of copper pipes due to the risk of leaks or damage. As long as the equipment is installed and maintained properly gas lines are perfectly safe. A smell is added to both types of gas so that leaks can be easily detected. Only professionals should repair a gas leak.
