If the water heater isn't heating, first check the thermostat to make sure it's set to the correct temperature. The fuse or circuit breaker box is another good place to look.
Check the heater too - they usually have a reset button. If it's a gas powered water heater, check the thermostat and the pilot light. If the pilot light has gone out it will need to be re-lit. If you're going to relight it yourself, be careful to follow the manufacturers instructions.
