Sump pumps are water pumps that are placed in an excavated hole either in the basement or around the perimeter of a house. As the groundwater level rises, the hole fills up. The sump pump activates and pumps the excess water through piping away from the house.
There are several types of sump pumps; submersible, pedestal and water powered.
The submersible type features a pump that is submerged in water. The pedestal type has a motor placed above the water level. The water-powered type relies on water pressure to power the pump rather than electricity.
Installing a sump pump can save your home from hundreds or even thousands of dollars of damage. The only thing required is some regular maintenance and cleaning of the pump.
